At least 11 of the weather balloons, containing 18,000 packages of black-market cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.

Air Travel Interruptions

The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.

Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.

Contraband Recovery

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

International Illegal Trade

Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."

To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Cross-Border Effects

Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."

European Tensions

Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.

Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
